I dont often write about food, but when you think about it, it plays a major part in our daily life.

I researched and found some observations from the Compass Group UK & Ireland, the Food People who compile a list of the top 10 food trends we can expect to emerge or, in some cases, continue into next year.

Multi-cuisine restaurants

Serving up dishes that take inspiration from all sorts of exciting and international sources are coming to the fore at the same time as nano-specialists that pour all their energy into mastering single ingredients.

When you look at the world of food, you realise that food trends are really being driven by consumers and what they need and want.

The other point that’s important to consider is the difference between a trend and a fad, A fad is confined to one category, channel or geography and usually just lasts for one season or year.

A good way to spot trends that will stand the test of time is to identify the ones that have one or more wider social drivers, such as health and wellbeing, or seeking experiences that support them.”

BBQ 2.0
Different barbecue techniques inherited from around the world will become part of restaurant theatre, Consumers will continue to crave the charred and smoky flavours from a barbecue.

As we see more chefs and barbecue operators starting to think of the barbecue or fire as an incredibly versatile cooking method, rather than an institution confined by history we can expect this momentum to continue with alternatives
to meats, such as fish and game, vegetables, new cuisines and desserts from the barbecue.

Global larder
As travel has become more affordable and technology ensures the world becomes better connected, the lines that divide regional fare have blurred.

Chefs and home cooks are growing, buying and cooking with ingredients more typical of exotic cuisines than with their own flare, forget about geographical barriers – flavour profiles from across the globe are being used in our kitchens, as consumers become more aware of the unusual flavour imparted by these world ingredients.

Multi-cuisine cooking
This is a food movement that is less about fusion and more about choice,

Quantity and quality are key, as influences and ingredients move from specific regional classics to global favourites, taking their seat at the world table.

Nano-specialism
This is almost the perfect counter-trend to multi-cuisine cooking, focusing as it does on expertise, excellence and the narrative.

“Now is the time to be a specialist in your field,” says Banks. “Make your food shine, showing it off to its best possible potential. These specialists are showcasing individual ingredients and creating surprising and delicious dishes with only one main ingredient.

“These nano-specialists are becoming masters of the humble avocado or bag of crisps, as boundaries are pushed and experimentation takes over.”

Provenance
Consumers are more interested in where their food comes from than ever – from the breed to the farm and the farmer’s name. But why do they want so much information?

Gorgeous Group’s Bargh says: “In a world of consumer distrust, knowing the back story helps to create an element of trust and transparency between the consumer and the retailer, brand and chef, and gives consumers the ability to create a real emotional connection.”

Compass’s Davies agrees: “People seek honest stories they can trust in an uncertain world. It feels good to know who made your food or drink, where it comes from and how it was cared for.”

Authenticity
Simon Parton, Compass Group UK & Ireland’s head of food and beverage innovation, says: “Authenticity is a delicate balance. At the very top level, it means total authenticity of the recipe and the ingredients. This is expensive, so to most of us authenticity means capturing the essence of the cuisine, the flavours, the key ingredients, the colours and smells; not breaking the rules by using the wrong meat, for instance.”

Veg-centric cooking
Meat-free dining has become a lifestyle choice for today’s health-conscious and environmentally aware consumers and it’s one that they’re choosing to dip in and out of.

“Veg-centric cooking is a trend that’s been bubbling away for a while,” says Nick Vadis, culinary director at Compass Group UK & Ireland. “That’s why we’ve developed our new vegetarian Root Kitchen concept for the business. But the people asking for it are not necessarily vegetarian.”

Vadis describes this group as ‘flexitarian’, while the Food People refers to them as ‘reducetarians’.

“This isn’t about being perfect, it’s about moderation of our carnivorous side,” says Banks. “Reducing any processes that harm the planet and finding cleaner ways to live and eat is better for our bodies and better for the world.”

Waste not, want not
The arguments for reducing waste are so compelling, for both the planet (less waste to landfill; conservation of natural resources) and hospitality operators (reduced costs), that the real question should be why not?

So it’s little wonder that food businesses are becoming increasingly innovative when it comes to lowering the levels of waste they produce.

“Restaurants are promoting themselves as having ‘no food waste’, using not only nose-to-tail but also root-to-tip [of fruit and vegetable]. Never before has so much of every plant and animal been used,” says Banks.

“There are a few operators that are responding to the desire from consumers to live within a sustainable food ecosystem. And it is extremely difficult to do if it is done properly. To quote Doug McMaster from Silo: ‘I don’t have a bin in my kitchen.’ Just think about that for a moment. Nothing is thrown away – no food, no packaging, nothing. That would completely change how a kitchen operates. He admits it’s very difficult, but it does mean you get very creative.”

Craft carbs
We can kiss goodbye to ‘plastic white bread’, says the Food People, as the craft of bread baking returns and a trend for artisan, flavoured and luxury loaves emerges.

Of course, craft carbs go well beyond bread, as Banks explains: “Forget about cheap and cheerful, carbs have taken on a luxurious edge, elevating their position from midweek staple to fine dining. Fresh, authentic pasta made with finely milled ancient grains, or bright, vibrant tagliatelle coloured with vegetables.”

Food by occasion…
… rather than food by type because, says Bargh: “Consumers are choosing to eat according to their mood, rather than the nationality of the food.”

This means, for example, that diners are looking for dishes that can provide a kick-start to their day, rather than food that is typically associated with breakfast. Banks says this is a trend that is particularly prevalent in the health space, but from an operator’s perspective, it’s not necessarily an easy appetite to satisfy: “The challenge is getting consumers to understand and articulate what they want at a more functional level.”

Food on the go
The grab-and-go food trend is expected to evolve in 2018 and it’s an opportunity not to be missed by hospitality businesses. The market was valued at £20.1b in 2016, with robust consumer demand for quick and quality food leading to substantial growth and no signs of it slowing down.

“On-the-go is the buzzword driving this trend,” says Parton. “We are all busy people – the average lunch in the UK is only 34 minutes – so we insist on eating on the go. Research we conducted found the sandwich has remained the favoured lunchtime choice, chosen by 63% of the UK workforce. We’ve done a massive amount of work to make sure we’re leading the way in delicious and convenient food. ‘On the go’ must not mean we compromise on quality and enjoyment.”

Whilst I agreed with some of the findings I was not overly surprises. The UK is becoming one big cultural melting pot, but you would think the only place this is happening is London.

Now I am no Financial expert, but I do know one thing, most of us want financial security, most of us would like more money, most of us with any money wants to increase it, and the internet is riff with the good bad and ugly tips, advice and dangers about letting go of your hard earned cash.

4. Successful rainmakers make business development a priority.

Successful rainmakers recognise that to be successful at business development, they need to make it a priority and work at it on a consistent basis. They treat their business development activities with the same level of commitment that they bring to client service.

Making business development a priority is as much about mind-set as it is about time management.

There are opportunities to market each day. Throughout the day, business entrepreneurs talk to clients, competition, and even staff. Spending a few extra minutes deepening a relationship at the end of each of these conversations, whether on a professional or personal level, will dramatically increase the probability of winning business.
But mind-set is not enough.

The effects of Grade Point Averages (GPA)

According to a study published in 2014, a one-point increase in high school GPA translated to
an 11.85-percent increase in annual earnings for men and a 13.77 percent annual earnings
increase for women. However, the higher percentage increase was not found to be enough
for women to catch up to men: women with a 4.0 high school GPA still made less, on average,
than men with a 2.5 GPA. We are now seeing evidence of this in unequal gender pay for the same job

College and post-college students often wonder how much weight their GPA carries in future
employment. The employer, company and industry play the largest factor in answering this question.

According to Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., senior vice president of human resources for IAC/Interactive Corp, a company with over 33,000 employees, an applicant’s GPA is the single best indicator of future success in job employment. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, since 2001 there has been an increase in employers looking at and making hiring decisions based on, a candidate’s GPA.

In addition, Job Outlook 2005 survey reported that 70 percent of employers looked at an applicant’s GPA, increasing to 75 percent in 2010. Those looking at and weighing in college GPA reported that their cut off was a GPA of 3.0 or lower (Morsch 2 CL 2007-2010)

GPA is not the only factor that determines future employment. Many employers look for other
pertinent characters such as leadership, teamwork, flexibility and attitude. They may also look at the reputation of the college attended and other work related experiences such as
internships. In a 2010 student survey for recruiters, 45 percent of the students who had
completed an internship had already received a job offer. Many of these jobs were within the
company that they interned for.

Although GPA seems to be important in the hiring process, other variables may contribute to
the likelihood of getting hired. If a student’s GPA is below a 3.0 or what the employer is looking for, it is suggested to calculate your GPA for only the classes within your major for your resume.

The effects of Consumer Confusion

Confusion occurs when a consumer fails to correctly understand or interpret products and
services. (Turnbell 2002 -2003). This, in turn, leads to them making imperfect purchasing
decisions. This concept is important to marketeers because consumer confusion may result in reduced sales, reduced satisfaction with products and difficulty communicating effectively with the consumer. It is a widely studied and broad subject which is a part of Consumer behaviour and Decision making.

The effects of Choice overload, financial pressures

Choice overload (sometimes called over choice in the context of confusion) occurs when the
set of purchasing options becomes overwhelmingly large for a consumer. A good example is a wine in the UK where supermarkets may present over 1000 different products leaving the consumer with a difficult choice process. Whilst large assortments do have some positive
aspects (principally novelty and stimulation and optimal solutions) any assortment greater
than around 12-14 products leads to confusion and specifically transferring the ownership of
quality assurance to the consumer.

What this means in practice is reduced levels of satisfaction with purchases from large assortments as a consumer may be left with doubt that they have succeeded in finding the “best” product. Choice overload is growing with every large database of online free courses such as Moodle, University offering large choices of taster courses which can often be misinterpreted as real courses.

Taking it all in

By no stretch of the imagination have I scratched the surface of all the different methods of
reviewing standards, methodologies, global rankings and other factors that suggest the
system(s) is failing to adequately prepare students and adults who are still in our system and will be for another 30 years to adjust to rapidly changing technology.

How can educators,prepare individuals for entrance into the global marketplace?

This is done by reviewing potential hindrances and shortcomings, of which I am going to list in my opinion the most relevant ones so that educators around the world can better explore and devote their best and brightest to finding solutions to shape educational strategies with a proactive approach designed to improve overall outcomes for success.

Before I begin I quote a reference from Charles Darwin

“It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best
manage change.”

Throughout the ages, every human society has experienced challenges adjusting to population
growth, maintaining structural order and creating channels for future generations. How well a society prepares the next generation for survival is imperative for the society as a whole but we have stalled in this process because we seem to be accumulating a pool of adults (who were once the next generation) who appear to be helpless in this new found world of information and technology -The intangible and more important how to work with the tangible.

One critical element of preparation in the 21st century is the ability to engage all ages and
cultures beyond communal borders. At the centre of this struggle for growth and prosperity is education.

I will now explore some of the current educational strategies which are failing to prepare the current adult generation sufficiently enough to enter the global workforce and sustain their family, community and contribute to their countries economic prosperity.

Discrepancy in pay exists despite the proportion of black men with bachelor’s degrees increasing

Black male graduates in the UK earned £7,000 a year less from 2007 to 2017 than white males.
That’s according to a report by the Resolution Foundation, which highlighted that this discrepancy in pay exists despite the proportion of black men with bachelor’s degrees increasing 24 percentage points over the past two decades, compared to a 15 point increase for white men.

The think tank also revealed the average pay gap between white and Pakistani and Bangladeshi non-graduate men is more than £4 an hour.

So Is #Adult #Education Broken?

What has happened?

How can we make this new economic age enhance, rather than diminish, our quality of earning? How can we make this amazing innovation advance the prospects of all people especially those with experience and not just for the youth?

It is clear that at this moment most educational systems are not keeping pace with changing technology and the ever-evolving world of work.

Not enough people are thinking strategically enough in this area. Fundamentally, we need to change what people learn, how people learn, when people learn, and even why people learn.

We must get beyond the traditional model of students sitting passively in classrooms, following instructions and memorising material that they are tested and scored on which sometimes turn out to be of little use in an every changing economy. It is evident that computers can do that for us!

Diane believes that we need to make sure that the type of education supplied can keep a population in work or self-employment, performing meaningful tasks relevant to todays and tomorrow needs.

Education has to become student-centric and move away from solely institutional constructs that are not fluid to change.

Maybe we need to remind ourselves of the purpose of education by looking back in order to move constructively forward.

I Discovered That The Law of Attraction Cannot Work Effectively Without The Other 11 Universal Laws

There is a massive amount of misunderstanding about what the law of attraction is, I have heard the phrase very often “You become what you think about” and as such, many people find themselves becoming disillusioned with the whole thing quite quickly.

Having learned more about what the law of attraction really is allowed me to create changes in my life I never would have thought possible.

And that is why I am so passionate about this particular blog, and clearing up the confusion. It was the key to unlocking all sorts of awesomeness for me, and I want to help others do the same. And on that note, I want to discuss a few issues that have many lamenting that the law of attraction is a load of crap

Again, the law of attraction isn’t just about thinking something and getting it; just wanting something is not enough to bring it to you. You have to be a match to it, and by this I mean, your predominant thoughts, feelings and beliefs must be in harmony with your desire.

There is one concept I had to really get my head around and that was ‘The universe cannot say no’ just stick with me here… If you say out aloud verbally “I want a million pounds” what thought and real feelings came to you inside?

Well that’s the thought and feelings the universe responds too. Its no good repeating or writing something down if your inner self is in doubt because that doubt is the real instructions you are sending to the universe.

You must feel now as if you already have what you wanted — the law of attraction can’t defy your vibration. You can’t trick the Universe. The process of attraction is a neutral, mechanical process, and delivers output (experience) based on the input (your vibration). It is not judging, deciding or doing anything humans do. It can’t deliver the goods because you are a nice person, you really want something or that you are trying really hard to get it.

The whole emphasis on “being positive” can lead people astray and makes them think they are supposed to just stuff down their negative feelings and beliefs. But that isn’t what you should be doing. You have to admit your negative feelings and let yourself feel them so you can begin the process of transforming them. You have to be honest about your limiting beliefs, and then work on releasing them.

I felt inspired go into research The Laws Of The Universe because it is often misunderstood even by me and you cannot develop blind faith if you dont understand all the key components.

I don’t often quote the bible but in Job 38:33, we read:

“Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?”

The “ordinances of heaven and earth” (Jeremiah 33:25) or what people call “The Laws Of The Universe” or “The Laws of Nature” are imminent, infallible laws that govern our universe, the universe that God created. Every plant, rock, animal, matter, and person is ruled by those laws.

Universal Law #1 ~ The Law of Divine Oneness
Everything is connected to everything and everyone is connected to everyone. We are all brothers and sisters with a divine nature, and every thought, belief, word, and action of one affects every being that was, is, or will be (directly and/or indirectly). I love this law because there is divinity within each of us, and we are of infinite worth to our Heavenly Father, so we must recognise that and have faith.

Universal Law #2 ~ The Law of Vibration
God created the universe so that it vibrates, moves, and travels in circular patterns or motions; nothing rests, and all things are made of energy. Our feelings, emotions, visions, desires, thoughts, dreams, words, and will, attract and resonate with energies with similar frequency.

People often speak of karma only when they want someone punished, but living and feeling that thought in the instance is what the universe delivers so for example, when you bless adversity, and act in gratitude as if you already have and are what you desire, then it will come to you, because you are raising your vibrational frequency. The scriptures often speak about “rejoicing in our tribulations,” because joy attracts joy as much as “misery loves company.”

Universal Law #3 ~ The Law of Action
Faith without works is dead. The difference between who you are and who you want to be is what you do, when you engage in inspired actions that support your faith and belief. This does not mean you need to struggle, but you do put in attention and effort to manifest your intentions. Work is an eternal principle that was designed to teach us, challenge us, and help us grow.

Universal Law #4 ~ The Law of Correspondence
As the years go by, this law becomes more and more obvious to me: everything that is above reflects below, and your outer world reflects your inner world. Universal and ethereal principles have a corresponding principle in the physical plane. Everything that is temporal reflects a higher spiritual, eternal law . You can “take dominion” and change your circumstances from the inside out.

Universal Law #5 ~ The Law of Cause and Effect
Like Master Oogway says “there are no accidents.” Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Every cause (thought, word, or action) has an effect, result, and consequence. We are agents and choose in which direction we go, and with each choice, we create the circumstances that align with that choice. I always say: choices create circumstances!

Universal Law #6 ~ The Law of Compensation
You’ve heard this wisdom in many ways: Karma, The Golden Rule , or “we reap what we sow” .

It also teaches that we could expect rewards, blessings, miracles, and prosperity when we choose what is right and in alignment with our life’s purpose.

For example, when you are the source of love, joy, peace, trust, and abundant generosity, you will also be the recipient of those gifts. It’s not wrong to receive, but clearly, it is better to give cheerfully, because that is the only way to receive, and, in turn, to expand our capacity to give more.

I am always puzzled by the amount of excuses people come up with as to why they shouldn’t give £1 to a begger and think that those excuses are in some way not applied to them by their own inner thoughts from the universe one way or the other.

Universal Law #7 ~ The Law of Attraction
When we ask and have the faith to know it is possible, we are then ready to receive it , and “for as he thinketh in in heart so is he” .

In Matthew 5, Jesus taught that anger and lust are just as homicide and adultery, because our thoughts become things. It sounded crazy then and it may sound crazy now, but entertaining negative, destructive, and self-sabotaging thoughts will bring them to reality as a “self-fulfilling prophecy.” It is not about merely “wishing” or “hoping” or “visualising” things, but being conscious to align our thoughts with the results we desire.

Universal Law #8 ~ The Law of Perpetual Transmutation of Energy
I looked up the word transmutation, and it means “the action of changing or the state of being changed into another form.” It’s a transformation and a conversion, because energy is in constant motion . As children of God, we can harness the creative power within us to change our lives.

This law also states that higher vibrational energies consume lower energies. It’s the “Let Go and Let God,” allow, and surrender law. Any fear-based resistance (like control, judgemental or perfectionism ) blocks divine providence and grace from manifesting in our lives.

Universal Law #9 ~ The Law of Relativity
Everything works together for our good . This life is an opportunity to learn, grow, and progress, and every person is given a series of tests, challenges, and situations with the purpose to strengthen them, and connect or draw them closer to our creator. Life happens for you, not to you. Learn to see hardships as stepping stones, rather than stumbling blocks.

This law also teaches to put everything into its right perspective. The nature, value, or quality of something is measured in relation to another object.

For example you can complain about not having the latest designer shoes but think about the person who has no feet!

Universal Law #10 ~ The Law of Polarity
There is opposition in all things. We appreciate light in the darkness, joy in the sorrow, and companionship in solitude. Solid-liquid, hot-cold, up-down, sad-glad, good-bad… everything has an opposite, we can see the difference, and choose for ourselves. Without one the other would not exist and one is created out of the absence of the other.

If something is not working for you, direct your attention to its opposite, and you will be empowered.. in other words, “BE Positive and You’ll BE Powerful!”

If you keep complaining about being broke then broke you will remain. If you focus on the universe surprising you and live in expectation then surprised you will be.

Universal Law #11 ~ The Law of Rhythm
“What comes around goes around, and what goes up must come down.” All energy vibrates and moves according to a certain rhythm. Everything has natural cycles, seasons, patterns, and stages of development. Each cycle is a reflection of the regularity of God’s universe.

To master each rhythm, you must rise above any negative part of the cycle. stay in flow throughout these rhythms of life. I am sure you have heard the following saying “after the storm, at least comes the calm.”

Universal Law #12 ~ The Law of Gender
Also called the Law of Gestation; it states that when we plant a seed (masculine / yang), it requires time and nurturing to grow and manifest (feminine / ying). Patience and persistence are necessary to succeed in any endeavor, and many give up right before the goal is reached. Trust in the universes timing! Which takes you back to universal law 6 and 7

What Difference Do The Universal Laws Make?
The Universal laws help us understand the greatness of the creator, as well as His loving and merciful ways, because, if you think about it, this magnificent order allows us predictability and help us prevent chaos.

Whether we believe so or not, we are creators of our own life. (I prefer to think that we are directors of our own movie.)

We can either direct or be directed, take responsibility or give our power away by living in blame. Our beliefs become our thoughts, if your belief is oppressive, negative or destructive then they govern your thoughts. These, in turn, determine our feelings, triggers the choices which influence our actions, and ultimately the outcomes.

Knowing, understanding, and aligning with the laws of the universe can help you become conscious and intentional about directing your life. We are empowered to create our own reality through our imagination, and not by default, because everything that the creator put in place in this universe works with you and for you.
I have proven this to myself so many times.

‘Meeting up with mothers who were running small firms or freelancing made me feel connected to the real world again,’ says The Early Hour’s Anne Ridout

Annie Ridout had a one-year-old daughter when she launched her digital magazine for mothers, The Early Hour, in 2015.
“The only time that I could commit to writing and doing admin was during the baby’s nap times and evenings,” she says.

It meant that she had no free time to socialise and spent most days at home, alone.

She was left feeling incredibly lonely and unmotivated, but all that changed when she started to attend some networking events, including Mothers Meeting and The Step Up Club.

“Meeting up with other mothers who were running small firms or freelancing made me feel connected to the real world again,” she says. “I had women to talk to, moan with and get ideas from.”

At first, Ms Ridout found it intimidating, but soon realised that the key to networking is arriving prepared. “Do some research beforehand about the theme or subject – and think about what can you offer around it,” she says.

Don’t forget to ask for contact details, she adds, explaining that it’s not enough to just hand your card out:

“Send an email after the event saying that it was so lovely to meet them and ask to stay in touch – and don’t worry about coming across too keen; people will almost always be pleased to hear from you.”

Find a mentor

For Victoria Usher, founder of GingerMay PR, leaving the buzz of
an office and the comradeship of colleagues was unsettling when she started her own communications firm:

“It was a shock to realise that time-consuming tasks, such as admin and finances, needed to be factored into my schedule.”

Not having people around to discuss problems with was hard, she admits: “I felt lonely at points; I missed having a team.”

To help her through, she found a mentor, Jo Butcher, whom she met while working for Dentsu Aegis.

“We had a weekly Skype call and she would help me with
everything from brainstorming ideas to sense-checking my work,” explains Ms Usher. “It was comforting to know that there was someone at the end of the phone who had gone through the same and had a successful business to show for it.”

When looking for a mentor, try to find someone who has run a business in a similar field, but has grown it much bigger, she advises. It also helps if they have worked in the same role as you, so they truly understand the pressures that you’re facing.

Co-work with colleagues

Female business coach, Lenka Lutonska, thinks women in particular feel lonely when starting-up because they crave emotional connections with others – and that can be hard when working alone.

“When I started out, friends did not understand why I would leave a well-paid job, sell my house and sacrifice my lifestyle, only to work on a business with very little income,” she says. “There were few people whom I could talk to about work; my computer was my only companion.”

She decided to “buddy-up” with an old friend who had started their own business in a similar industry.

“We would create co-working days where she would come to my office for a day, or vice versa. We exchanged ideas, honest feedback, kept each other accountable and even partnered on projects,” says Ms Lutonska.

“Working not only became more enjoyable, but we also helped each other to become aware of our blind spots.”

She also started a Facebook group, which was initially made to attract clients but ended up becoming a great networking tool as word spread quickly and more women joined. Community members often ask for help with specific business issues.

“It can feel lonely to build a business on your own, and tough;
there’s always something that you don’t know.

“That’s why support groups are a fantastic source for tips and for socialising – they’re great for creating meaningful relationships with other entrepreneurs.”

Take a breather

A final tip comes from Sarah Cooke, owner of silicone jewellery company, Halia Rose, who suggests yoga classes.

“I do a regular class to get some time out to myself and stave off burnout, and I can chat to people about things totally unrelated to my business and get away from it for a while.”

Adult education has become undervalued in an overpriced educational infrastructure.

The people who need the most help are already systematically ripped off by greedy loan companies, NHS parking, having to pay charges for drawing out their own money from private ATM machines in poorer boroughs, pre-paid electric meter’s to name but a few.

The more you seem to need help the more you seem to have to pay.

Off course, the arguments are always about risk, but to compound on top of their needs, a premium, just to make sure the risk is compensated for is questionable indeed. But another kind of ripping off is taking place. ‘Free online education’ you may ask ‘why is this a rip-off people”?
I will answer this from my perspective initially and then make further arguments as to why we should be very concerned about this un-policed, unchallenged butchery of the values originally infused into our adult educational system.

  • How can we make this amazing innovation advance the prospects of all people especially those with or without experience and not just for the youth?

It is clear that at this moment most educational systems are not keeping pace with changing technology and the ever-evolving world of work.

Not enough people are thinking strategically enough in this area.  Fundamentally, we need to change what people learn, how people learn, when people learn, and even why people learn.

We must get beyond the traditional model of students sitting passively in classrooms, following instructions and memorising material that they are tested and scored on which sometimes turn out to be of little use in an every changing economy.

Throughout the ages, every human society has experienced challenges adjusting to population growth, maintaining structural order and creating channels for future generations. How well a society prepares the next generation for survival is imperative for the society as a whole but we have stalled in this process.

There seems to be a range of systemic failures such as

: failure to consider cultural relevance
: failure to develop enterprising and entrepreneurial skills
: failure to prepare about taking personal responsibility
: failure to provide adequate technology and supporting curriculum

Diane Shawe Author states that “the traditional belief that we must prepare ourselves to be ‘employable’ is under threat. The counter argument encourages us to ‘gear up’ for earning our own money, rather than seeing income as someone else’s responsibility”

With the population dramatically aging and low-level jobs increasingly swallowed up by machinery, entrepreneurship will be a necessity for many, rather than a lifestyle choice for some.

SMEs are of course already leading this charge but in order to gear up for the future we need to start off by asking a serious question, defining criteria’s and examining trends, impact these trends will have and plan a way to jointly prepare current and future generations to be both employable and entrepreneurial.

We are living in a new economy—powered by technology, fueled by information, and driven by knowledge. And we are entering the new century with an opportunity on our side but huge problems that require new thinking.

Donald Trump has accidentally made twitter hip with his regular out of context rants so if you use it right, Twitter can be a massive lead generation tool for your business. The problem is, many don’t take the time to learn how to use Twitter effectively.

They open an account, put out some tweets, and then wonder why there aren’t thousands of people flooding to their account to follow them and buy their product or service.

The truth is that it takes time and effort to learn how to use Twitter for lead generation and sales. Getting followers is no easy task, and converting followers into customers is even more challenging.

Luckily, I’m going to share with you a top strategy that I have used to help my clients turn their Twitter account into a highly effective lead generation tool.

Find out who your competitors’ customers are

It’s not enough to just get followers on Twitter. To get sales, you need to have followers who are interested in what your company is offering.

There may be no better tool to use to directly engage your competitors’ customers than Twitter. Just go to each of your competitors’ Twitter pages and click on their followers. Doing so will reveal every account that is following your competitors.

What a leads list!

While not every account that is following your competitors is doing business with them, they all have indicated an interest. That means they are likely to be interested in knowing what your company has to offer as well.

Follow your competitors’ followers

Once you’re on their page and looking through their list of followers, begin to follow the accounts that look like they would be interested in your company.

Also look to see who is engaging with your competitors’ tweets by liking and retweeting them. Consider following these accounts as well. Engaging with your competitors’ tweets shows that they are active accounts with a strong interest in the subject matter that you are likely to be tweeting about as well.

When you follow someone on Twitter, they receive a notification that you have followed them. The reaction of most people is to then go to your account to see if you are worth following back.

Following your competitors’ followers will have a significant portion of them heading to your profile.

So make sure your profile is looking good and is ready to impress. Pin a tweet to your profile with your best offer and include a link to a landing page where people can make a purchase or sign up.

To pin a tweet, create a tweet with your offer, call to action, and link. Then, once the tweet is live, click on the drop-down menu in the top right corner of the tweet and choose “pin to your profile page.” Doing this will place the tweet at the top of your profile page, so it is the first tweet people see when visiting your page.

After following, give people 3-5 days to follow you back. If they don’t follow back, either their account is not active, or they’re not interested in you. Either way, go ahead and un-follow the people that don’t follow you back.

This will free up space in your network for you to be able to continue to follow your prospects on Twitter.

If you pursue this strategy, over time you will grow a highly targeted following full of potential customers.

Outsourcing your knowledge

When you think about the power of your brain and how we learn, memorise and recall all those facts, it can get very confusing. Having taught for nearly 25 years and trained some of the brightest professionals over last 10 years, I believe that knowledge is divided in two distinct areas. We can either know about a subject ourselves or we know where we can retrieve information on that subject. The massive amount of information available online has opened an infinite library of easily and quickly retrievable information with simple search engines. I like to think of it as an organic external hard drive, an outsourced memory we can plug in at any time. Some have argued that the internet dilutes the most traditional kind of knowledge: knowing a subject ourselves. They argue that in some way it makes our brains less efficient, diminishing our intelligence and destroying our inner hard drives and memory.

You may remember (if you are of a certain age) that when you were young, you knew by heart the phone number of your closest friends. Since the introduction of digital directories on smartphones there is no longer any reason to memorise numbers by heart.   On the other hand, how many hundreds more contacts do you have now compared to then thanks to the digital directories? In reality, how much more connected are you? The real deal of the information age is not that it allows us to know more, but that it allows us to know less in terms of depth of what we know, as mentioned by David Brooks, a New York Times columnist, in his famous 2006 NY Times article[1] The Outsourced Brain.

I’ve externalised it.” He said, “I am one of those baby boomers who are making this the “It’s on the Tip of My Tongue Decade.” But now I no longer need to have a memory, for I have Google, Yahoo and Wikipedia. Now if I need to know some fact about the world, I tap a few keys and enjoy the vast resource of the external mind.”

I think the positive side of this is that we are free to expand our awareness of subjects we did not have space, or availability, to explore before. Our memory now has a different function: it is a digital index that remembers the existence of a subject and what are the best leads to find information on that subject. I too had thought that the magic of the information age was that it allowed us to know more facts. Then I realised that the magic of the information age is that it allows us to know less.

It provides us with external cognitive servants, silicon memory systems if you will, with collaborative online filters, consumer preference algorithms and networked knowledge. We thus can give these servants the massive raw data and liberate ourselves to think, explore and be creative. You can use your brain to learn new skills, the soft skills that are the true measure of success.

Your outsourced memory (the internet, the cloud and more) allows you to be aware of the existence of information you would never have come across before when you were limited to what your inner memory could hold. It allows you to increase the quantity (and thus the quality) of the information that you can process because you do not always have to worry about memorising every single detail of it. It allows you to use more brain power in linking concepts and applying them rather than remembering them. It empowers you to think and process information faster because your brain has the space to hold links to so much different information, and in doing so it expands your subjective time. Back in the analogue era, the difference between a deep brain and a shallow brain was the availability of information and the choice of whether to take in that information or not came second.

As an educationalist and technophile, combined with my outsourced memory I have the capacity to think deeper. Now that (nearly) everything is available, the power is back to you: it is up to you to take responsibility of what content goes into your mind and how you use your outsourced memory.

Now you have begun to outsource your brain and now have room to do something rather special with your neo-cortex. Enjoy.
