Getting Started in the Hair Extensions Business by Diane Shawe

This little ebook (one of its advantages is its manageable size) is great for exactly what it says, a really practical guide for someone wanting to start up in this obviously very fruitful and expanding field.

It is rather surprising that there seems to be nothing much available just on this subject certainly every lady I know without exception has extensions!

The length and approach seem to be just about right, and the effectiveness of someone who is perhaps not all that well informed initially, but enthusiastic, will be definitely increased by having this book to turn to from time to time. The information is accessible; Diane evidently knows her subject backwards, but the reader is in no way subjected to overload. –Dolman Scott Publishing 2008

How My Teacher Almost Dashed My Dreams Of Writing

wear your pretty shoes well by diane shawe884346925..jpg

When I was 8 years old I remember my teacher Mr Lester ripping up my homework and accusing me of copying the story I wrote for my homework that week. I remember it was a story about being lost in the woods at night, I use to be afraid of the dark back then.

I cried and said I hadn’t copied it, he gave me detention on top of that and called me a liar.

I was so embarrassed and ashamed I never did well in English Literature again just to spite him I thought but really he had squashed my confidence.

16 books later all published on Amazon with my most recent which took 3 years to write and a healthy vibrant blog with over 35k followers which I have been nurturing since 2010

I Just Learned This Little-Known Twitter Strategy to Sell to my Competitors’ Customers

This twitter strategy is so good it will leave you wishing you had been doing it sooner

By Nominated Guest Blogger John White @juanblanco

I found this article and I just had to share it on my blog because it was so simple

Donald Trump has accidentally made twitter hip with his regular out of context rants so if you use it right, Twitter can be a massive lead generation tool for your business. The problem is, many don’t take the time to learn how to use Twitter effectively.

They open an account, put out some tweets, and then wonder why there aren’t thousands of people flooding to their account to follow them and buy their product or service.

The truth is that it takes time and effort to learn how to use Twitter for lead generation and sales. Getting followers is no easy task, and converting followers into customers is even more challenging.

Luckily, I’m going to share with you a top strategy that I have used to help my clients turn their Twitter account into a highly effective lead generation tool.

Find out who your competitors’ customers are

It’s not enough to just get followers on Twitter. To get sales, you need to have followers who are interested in what your company is offering.

There may be no better tool to use to directly engage your competitors’ customers than Twitter. Just go to each of your competitors’ Twitter pages and click on their followers. Doing so will reveal every account that is following your competitors.

What a leads list!

While not every account that is following your competitors is doing business with them, they all have indicated an interest. That means they are likely to be interested in knowing what your company has to offer as well.

Follow your competitors’ followers

Once you’re on their page and looking through their list of followers, begin to follow the accounts that look like they would be interested in your company.

Also look to see who is engaging with your competitors’ tweets by liking and retweeting them. Consider following these accounts as well. Engaging with your competitors’ tweets shows that they are active accounts with a strong interest in the subject matter that you are likely to be tweeting about as well.

When you follow someone on Twitter, they receive a notification that you have followed them. The reaction of most people is to then go to your account to see if you are worth following back.

Following your competitors’ followers will have a significant portion of them heading to your profile.

So make sure your profile is looking good and is ready to impress. Pin a tweet to your profile with your best offer and include a link to a landing page where people can make a purchase or sign up.

To pin a tweet, create a tweet with your offer, call to action, and link. Then, once the tweet is live, click on the drop-down menu in the top right corner of the tweet and choose “pin to your profile page.” Doing this will place the tweet at the top of your profile page, so it is the first tweet people see when visiting your page.

After following, give people 3-5 days to follow you back. If they don’t follow back, either their account is not active, or they’re not interested in you. Either way, go ahead and un-follow the people that don’t follow you back.

This will free up space in your network for you to be able to continue to follow your prospects on Twitter.

If you pursue this strategy, over time you will grow a highly targeted following full of potential customers.

Why Does Moisture Matter to Hair Extensions

Why does Moisture matters to Hair Extensions?

Author Diane Shawe extracted from ‘How Hair Extensions are Sourced, Treated and Graded’

Simply put, moisture is the single most important factor in determining the way your client’s hair looks! When moisture drops below 10-10.2% (depending on the type of hair and the level of environmental humidity), hair will look like brittle straw as opposed to supple green grass.

The critical moisture level is the difference between a freshly baked bread and one left on the counter for a few days. In the example of
the straw or the stale slice of bread, if we apply
the slightest pressure, they will break. The same
pressure on the fresh slice of bread or the green
grass shows us how malleable these materials could be. Likewise, any pressure put on dry human hair, as opposed to well-moisturised hair, will result in breakage.

Moisture = Strength

Here are some details I found to illustrate my point. An average strength properties reading for Indian non-cuticle hair with a diameter of 0.055mm would be 0.22 gn/m². An average result for the same type of hair from the same bundles, but completely soaked with tap water would be 0.66 gn/m². A normal value for such hair would be around 0.32 gn/m². (gn/m² stands for Giganewtons per square meter, which is a measure of pressure.

For human hair, these figures explain the fibre͛s strength – the amount of pressure it can
withstand before breaking.)

The important lesson here is that moisture – any type of moisture – will increase the strength
of the hair by up to 300%! Every test conducted has shown that plain water is as effective as any conditioner or leave-in moisturiser.

For example, try wearing your jeans after washing them, while they are still soaking wet and feel the roughness of the fabric. This has to do with the swelling and increased strength of the fabric when wet. Until the water evaporates, the denim will be significantly stronger.

The same goes for hair. All the stories written by marketing departments about conditioners that add strength and elasticity to hair are about as good as the stories your parents used to tell you to calm you before going to sleep – It’s all placebo effect.

Theres more to adding hair

The role of conditioners

Conditioner will add strength, but only temporarily, just as water will. Now we are getting to one of the major trade-offs between conditioner and water.

Water will evaporate much faster, but will not leave deposits that will weigh down your client’s hair. Conditioner will evaporate much more slowly and contribute to the strength of the hair for a longer time, but will leave deposits that may weigh down the hair.

In hot desert climates it is extremely important to maintain the moisture of the hair, especially if the client spends any time in the sun. It is just as important to maintain the moisture in centrally heated or air conditioned environments as they subject the hair to continued dehydration. It is also worth noting that just a few minutes of ultra-violet exposure on treated hair is enough to make a significant impact. In these conditions, a very light leave- in conditioner is highly recommended.

If the client is not inclined to buy more products, give or sell him a very small mist bottle (2 oz. will be sufficient) filled with water and have him mist his hair a few times a day.

A lot of consumers have expressed concern about inconsistency, However, as an educational service… and perhaps a warning… I͛d like to offer a brief primer on the advantages and disadvantages of each type of hair and explain the cost differences and the reasons for them. I’ll also answer the question, as long as it feels good, looks good and doesn’t tangle, why I care where the hair originated? When I’m done, you too will appreciate the behind the scenes negotiating and control that is provided invisibly day in and day out by your current importer.

The first question all new customers ask is where did the hair come from?

Myth

• That these new systems can replace your own hair and make your hair look as though it is growing out of your scalp all over no matter which direction you style or comb it
• That these systems can be worn for very long periods of time with just a bit of glue around the edges
• That you can thread your own hair through these systems
• That you can weave a lace of hair all over your own head to get a seamless look
• That you can wear a system continueously for 6 months without any maintainence
• European girls cannot wear hair enhancement systems

Facts

What is hair enhancement system?

A hair enhancement system is made out of French Lace or Swiss Lace and is virtually undetectable to the naked eye when placed against the skin. This is most definitely the case of a quality handmade hair enhancement system. (The hair is knotted into the lace and appears to grow from the scalp offering a natural appearance. Only a hair enhancement system can be trusted to maintain the illusion of growing hair and it’s the preferred choice of celebrities, actors, and people in media.

There’s more to adding Hair

What is a hair enhancement system made from?

All hair enhancement system are made with 100% Indian Remy or Asian Remy human hair. The “lace ” portion of the system allows recession on the scalp for an all natural hair line as if the hair were growing directly from the scalp. The various types of cap bases include – French Lace, Swiss Lace, French Lace + Ear to Ear Stretch, and French Lace with Thin Skin Nape. The system are made with 100% Cuticle hair and each hair is individually hand-tied for allowing for a tangle free hair styling solution.

• Indian Remy or Asian Remy hair
• French or Swiss Hair enhancement system
• Stretch lace and or/Thin Skin at the rear
• Hand Tied All Hair enhancement system
• Free Style Part – Hair can be parted anywhere within hair enhancement systemand worn in low or high ponytail.

French Lace

French lace is a strong material used at the front edge of a hairpiece in combination with bleached knots to give and extremely undetectable look. The knots are not hidden by lace, but using lighter knots creates the illusion of growing hair. French lace is less fragile than Swiss lace and with care could last a long time.

Swiss Lace

Swiss Lace is more fragile than French lace but strong enough if handled carefully. It is the most undetectable but also very delicate. Swiss lace needs to be handled with care and is not recommended for first time users to lace front wigs.

French Lace + Thin Skin

French Lace + Thins Skin Nape is a very thin, clear coat of polyurethane over a clear silk base that allows for easy application and removal. This will allow a client a secure fit on the back of the head and scalp without the application of glue. It still appears extremely natural and is very flexible.

100% Human Hair Lace Systems

100% Human Hair Hair enhancement system
The benefits of human hair hair enhancement system are that they can and should be treated exactly as your own hair. Human hair can be coloured, permed, or hair can be curled or straightened with a curling iron or electric straighteners. Heat is not a problem with human hair. The hair needs the same treatment and care as growth hair, when you purchase the wig you must consider it as your own.

Why buy Remy treated Hair (cuticle hair)?

Remy treated Hair is truly superior human. The Cuticle are all kept in the same direction and is just like nature intended it to be. Texture is silky soft with subtle waves. Cuticle hair is created by careful processing which keeps the cuticle layer of the hair in place and in the same direction. The result is a superior hair item that colours beautifully- it has the highlights and natural shading just like your own hair.

Humaine Hair

This is the new breed of hair that is made for synthetic that is heat tolerant. The more expensive the Humaine hair the more natural it looks. In some ways it is much better because it holds it style, it does not require constant washing and grooming, does not require any hairsprays and can be kept in very good condition and style for a fraction of the cost and time.

Guarding your Hair, Beauty and Hair Extensions business reputation online

There’s more to adding hair

Your reputation and brand are linked.

Article extracted from ‘Getting started in the hair extensions business by Diane Shawe
Guarding your brand encompasses your personal reputation, business name and appearance of your salon or even your mobile business.

Your staff and their performance, how they treat and look after clients, the quality of products you use and the level of service you deliver are also linked to your brand.

All of these are your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) and your USP is your promise to deliver a benefit to your clients who expect you to live up to your promise.

Six ways to help yourself protect your brand

1. Avoid using profanity. You may think that swearing is cool, but you would be surprised at the number of people it offends. Express yourself simply and clearly.

2. Always give your clients your undivided attention. Try not to spend time texting or speaking on your phone whilst doing a clients hair.

3. Be dependable, keep commitments, practice honesty and show no form of disloyalty. Do not gossip or slander.

4. Do not ever take ethical shortcuts; always do the right thing. Maintain a high standards and keep the clients happy. Once a reputation has been shattered, it is very hard to fix the damage. Bad word of mouth spreads like wildfire. So make sure to protect your reputation.

5. Keep your prices and terms and conditions up to date. Make them available and accessible.

6. Ask your clients for reviews, people forget to post a review when they are happy, but when annoyed they go to  the internet to tell everyone else but you.

Dishonourable Competitive Complaints (DCC)

Competitors have found a dishonourable way to rubbish another competitors name whilst promoting there own business or services.

Be aware that there are many DCC complaint websites that are not policed in anyway and allows anyone to post a destructive message without any real link back to them.

Messages can also be posted against your Youtube videos, facebook, Google, blogs and articles, so it is sometime worth ticking the box that allows you to approve any messages before they are posted against your name or business.

Get the brush your hair deserves

None of us have the time to go through the internet with a fine toothcomb, but bear in mind that when people use to talk about each other behind each other’s backs, it was all word of mouth and often without your knowledge.

The internet has changed all this and it can be very devastating for small businesses when a client decides to wage a campaign against you and your only sources of income is from your business.

So my advice is to keep posting positive articles, blogs and testimonials from happy clients.

Hopefully in the not too distant future the same rules that apply to newspaper defamation will also apply to the internet.

Celebs 5 most popular Hair Colours this Autumn

Jet Black

All-black everything can be daunting, the Kardashian have made it very popular however for a fresh take on this Autumn favorite, try warming up jet-black with ribbons of chestnut highlights. A few piecey, cool-toned strands like Olivia Munn’s look especially stellar on olive skin tones.

Dark Bronde

Already have a darker brownish-blond shade like Khloé Kardashian’s? Ask for a glaze. “With exposure to summer sun, your hair tends to fade and get bleached out.

Warm Copper

Consider this a marriage between dusty rose gold and deep auburn, with a warm metallic spark all its own.

On the brighter end of the copper spectrum sits Emma Roberts’ “cayenne red,” because of the rich red gleam that runs through the color. The shade contrasts her light complexion, and, maybe it’s just us, but it reminds us of autum. If you choose to go this route, it’s vital to keep the red hue from falling flat, so follow these celebrity-endorsed tips for keeping your red as vibrant as possible.

High-Contrast Roots

For anyone who dyes their hair, you understand how annoying root touch-ups can be. Instead of rushing into the salon, let your roots work in your favor this fall. By growing out your hair without a salon touch-up, it takes on a naturally lived-in appearance that celebrities like Hailey Baldwinhave proved to be fans of.

The best part of high-contrast roots, like Joan Smalls’ chic look  is that there’s pretty much zero upkeep. Simply let your roots grow in and your blond ends grow out, and sooner or later—boom—you’ve got yourself ombré hair.

Ombré

If you thought ombré was over, think again, because it’s still going strong. Get Jenna Dewan Tatum’s perfect two-tone look by going cool on top, warm on the bottom. Have your colorist add a caramel-color tone from midlengths to ends in order to soften a natural brunette base.

Sandy Beige

Great news for those of you who love ultra-blond highlights in the summertime: By adding some beige-toned streaks like Behati Prinsloo’s to your hair for fall, you’ll end up with incredibly beautiful dimension and richness. Keep the color lasting longer with a few of our favorite shine-inducing hair products.

For a different take on the shade, like Jordyn Woods’ here, aim for a sandy allover color that gradually deepens, just a touch, at the roots.

How answering 77 questions could help you avoid business failure

Out Now: 77 Ways to avoid Potential Business Failure77 Questions to avoid business failure by Diane Shawe white background

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” –Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple

Like you I Never Thought I Could answer 77 questions that would help me  avoid business failure  – But I Finally Discovered The Secret! Here’s How…

article by Diane Shawe Author

Are you ready? Is Entrepreneurship For You?
Are you the right person for your business idea?

In business, there are no guarantees. There is simply no way to eliminate all the risks associated with starting a small business – but you can improve your chances of success with good planning, preparation, and insight. Start by evaluating your strengths and weaknesses as a potential owner and manager of a small business. Carefully consider each of the following questions.

  • Are you a self-starter? It will be entirely up to you to develop projects, organise your time, and follow through on details.
  • How well do you get along with different personalities? Business owners need to develop working relationships with a variety of people including customers, vendors, staff, bankers, and professionals such as lawyers, accountants or consultants. Can you deal with a demanding client, an unreliable vendor, or a cranky receptionist if your business interests demand it?
  • How good are you at making decisions? Small business owners are required to make decisions constantly – often quickly, independently, and under pressure.
  • Do you have the physical and emotional stamina to run a business? Business ownership can be exciting, but it’s also a lot of work. Can you face six or seven 12-hour work days every week?
  • How well do you plan and organise? Research indicates that poor planning is responsible for most business failures. Good organisation of financials, inventory, schedules, and production can help you avoid many pitfalls.
  • Is your drive strong enough? Running a business can wear you down emotionally. Some business owners burn out quickly from having to carry all the responsibility for the success of their business on their own shoulders. Strong motivation will help you survive slowdowns and periods of burnout.
  • How will the business affect your family? The first few years of business startup can be hard on family life. It’s important for family members to know what to expect and for you to be able to trust that they will support you during this time. There also may be financial difficulties until the business becomes profitable, which could take months or years. You may have to adjust to a lower standard of living or put family assets at risk in the short-term.

Call us to enquiry about our soft skills courses

Loads of grants and bursaries go unclaimed each year in the UK, so we’ve created this guide so you can bag the cash you’re entitled to.

Further education loans for mature students in England

If you’re 24 or over, you can apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to help with college or training tuition costs in England.

You’ll need to be studying a Level 3 or 4 course – these include A-levels, Access to Higher Education Diplomas and many apprenticeships You can take a loan for each A-level, but you can’t take them all at once. You must also have lived anywhere in the UK for the last three years.

There’s no credit check to get the loan, and it doesn’t depend on your household income. How much you get depends on what you’re studying and what your college charges in tuition fees. The minimum loan is £300. The loan will be paid directly to the college.

There’s also a 24+ Advanced Learning Loans Bursary Fund, which you can apply to if you need learning help, or to cover childcare or residential costs.

If you’re studying an Access to Higher Education diploma, then go on to complete a higher education course, your 24+ Advanced Learning Loan is written off.

You start paying the loan back when you earn £21,000 a year or more. Interest is charged at RPI+3% while you’re studying, then at RPI.

Who can apply? Anyone over the age of 24 studying a Level 3 or 4 course.
What’s the maximum award? £300 upwards. What does it cover? Tuition fees/training costs.

Free short courses

Fee-free tuition for Scottish students

If you live in Scotland and decide to study at a university in Scotland, you won’t have to pay anything towards tuition fees, you’ll be guaranteed to get a maintenance loan and may be eligible for a bursary. But if you live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, you’ll still have to pay up to £9,000 a year to study in Scotland.

The Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) offers the Young Students’ Bursary, which covers day-to-day living costs if your family’s household income is less than £34,000 a year. Those on an income of less than £17,000 will get the full bursary of £1,750.

Anyone who applies through SAAS will be eligible for a loan of at least £4,750 if their household income is £34,000 or above, while others will receive £5,750.

There’s also an Independent Students’ Bursary and student loan for those who are 25 or over, are married or living with a partner, or responsible for a child. Here, you’ll get a bursary of £750 if your household income is under £17,000.

Loans work in the same way for mature students – you’ll get at least £4,750 if your household income is over £34,000, while those with an income under £17,000 can borrow up to £6,750.

Who can apply? Loans: Everyone. Bursary: Households earning under £34,000 a year.
What’s the maximum award? £300 upwards. What does it cover? Living or studying costs.

Why Study With Us Unemployed PosterIndividual Learning Accounts for Scottish adults

Who can apply? Adults in Scotland. What’s the maximum award? £200. What does it cover? Learning costs.

Discretionary Learner Support

You can apply for Discretionary Learner Support from your education provider if you’re 19 or over, studying for a further education course, and facing financial hardship. This money can go towards childcare, accommodation, travel or course materials & equipment.

Your school or college decides how much you’ll get, and which scheme you’ll be put on, ie it could be a direct payment (you don’t have to pay it back), a loan, or paid directly to your landlord.

Who can apply? Anyone over 19. How much can you get? Varies. What does it cover? Any costs associated with studying

Care to Learn

There is help for those who have to bear the cost of course fees and childcare through the Government’s Care to Learn scheme. You must be 20 years or over at the start of your course to be eligible for the scheme, and be the main carer for your child. This is not suitable for those studying a higher education course at university.

The sum covers childcare, deposit and registration fees, travel costs for taking your child to the provider, and keeping your childcare place over the holidays. Childcare providers must be registered with Ofsted.

Payments of £160 per child per week (£175 if you live in London) will stop if you stop studying, you finish the course, or your child stops attending childcare.

Who can apply? Aged 20 or over, studying publicly-funded course in England. How much can you get? £160 or £175 per child per week. What does it cover? Childcare costs.

Professional and Career Development Loans

If you think grants and loans are only for university students, think again. These loans are offered at a reduced interest rate, which the Government pays while you’re studying, and are there to help those who want to top up their training.

To be eligible, you need to be over 18 and must have been living in anywhere in the UK for at least three years before the start of your course. Your course must last two years, or up to three years with a year of work experience.

The snag is that the course must be provided by an organisation on the Professional Career and Development Loan Register, so you’ll need to check.

Be careful of imposters – only Barclays and Co-op currently offer these loans. For more information, take a look at our Career Development Loans guide.

Who can apply? Anyone over 18. How much can you get? Between £300 and £10,000. What does it cover? Any tuition costs associated with developing your career.

Here are my top 3 ideas for improving your efficiency:

1. Learn to schedule emails.

If you truly understand email marketing, you know that there is an optimal time to send an email, depending on who is getting it. In order to ensure your email is actually read (rather than ending up in the bin) you need to send it when the recipient is most likely to read it.  The solution is to crank out the email, and then queue it up to send first thing in the morning. I no longer have to remember to send the email in the morning, have less concern that the email will be buried in the inbox and don’t ruin anyone’s evening with an email request from me.

2. Online Training Courses

Save time and simplify- train online. Today there are mnay thousands of eLearning (and more importantly mLearning, m for mobile) courses for everything from painting to digital photography and journalism. There is a plethora of online training courses for various aspects of business, from building a web enterprise to business accounting. These courses have benefits for existing organisations and for people dreaming of starting up their own business empire. The phenomenon of the internet means that people can be trained online as easily as they can learn at a training centre saving time, money and energy. But make sure it is a proper accredited course. To gain access to an online course all you need is to subscribe and have an internet connection. This means you can learn new business skills from your office, your armchair at home or perhaps, for a few lucky people, from a beach front café.

The variety of business courses available continues to increase and this is great news if you want to eLearn, anytime and anyplace. Some course providers offer training in financial reporting for people requiring time management and everything from writing reports and proposals to How to be an entrepreneur. The excellent range of online courses means that prices are generally quite competitive.

3. Cloud Magic to find and retrieve information.

For many years I have used my inboxes as catch all storage repositories, only to find the search and retrieval process cumbersome, if not impossible. How frustrating is it, knowing that you stored some digital notes about a client meeting, but you have no idea where?  I have starting using the excellent CloudMagic (www.cloudmagic.com ) where you have one interface to search through all of your personal data repositories like Gmail, Outlook, Evernote, Dropbox and more. If you’re one who worries about your digital privacy, this service may not be for you.  Of course, make sure you read and are comfortable with their privacy policy before proceeding.

In a small or medium size business it is clear that the amount of information created will continue to grow exponentially. Without tools, training and technologies helping you cut through the digital noise, you will damage your ability to innovate and grow your business.

Don’t let yourself drown in information or let the world change before you very eyes. Organise and improve the structure of your digital communications, digitial learning and retrieval with these three ideas.
